Eric Walker Internet Business Updates

Eric L Walker [dot] com Coming Down

In another week or so this site, Eric L Walker [dot] com will be down for (re)construction. It might be down for as long as a few weeks. In previous posts here, I’ve spoken about creating a new site called Start Marketing Smart. I’ve decided against that. What was going to be Start Marketing Smart will now simply be Eric L Walker.

The reason for this is because I’ve grown to really enjoy this blog, and I don’t want to neglect it by starting something new. So I’ve taken pencil to paper to dovetail the two together. My internet business will be built around this blog.

My blog business funnel will still include teaching people how to create their own content marketing system. But there are more facets and intricacies to be included.

Going Back to Work Has Helped My Internet Business

Many of you who read this blog regularly know that I decided to go back to work. You can read about the important decision to go back to work here –> Good Advice for Your Internet Business.

I wanted to update you about my decision making process and new things that have unfolded. First of all, going back to work was a decision I made solely for money. I was feeling stressed about relying solely on my internet business to support my family especially since my internet business hasn’t been realized yet. I still have a long way to go to build out all that I have planned.

To be completely honest, my internet business wasn’t fully supporting my family. Combine that economic reality with the fact that it became clear to me that in order to grow my internet business, I would need to take a portion of its earnings and reinvest it. And I’d need to do this for a few months, maybe longer.

So I went looking for a job and found one within one week.

Adventures of Finding a Job Not a Career

I know a lot of people are hurting out there. Many are jobless and some hopeless. I don’t watch or read much news, but I know the economy is hurting. But I found a job in one week.

I found a job NOT a career. If I wanted a career I would have gone back to finish my Masters Degree which is halfway complete in the education field. If I wanted a career, I would have gone back to the previous school district I worked for to network and see what was open for the fall. That’s not what I wanted. I’m committed to my internet business.

Now that you understand that distinction, finding a job wasn’t hard. I had interviews with a couple temp agencies where I could have worked in a warehouse or assembly line; I had an interview as a carpet cleaner; I had an orientation to sell vacuum cleaners; I had an interview as a freelance writer and I had an interview to be a server at a fine dining restaurant.

I can’t say I was thrilled about any of them, but I took the freelance writing gig AND the server position at the fine dining restaurant. I’m now a working man! And it feels good to relinquish a certain amount of worry and stress. It took me a week to find work; took another week to get started and on the right track, and now I’m beginning to focus on a new routine.

The First Re-Investment I Made Toward My Internet Business

I’ve had my blog business funnel plan detailed, drawn out and neatly organized in a notebook for about a month now. I’ve outline the content marketing strategy, and have begun to create some of that content. I’ve created sketches of how I want the (re)design of this blog to look.

There is a lot I can do behind the scenes, but design isn’t one of them. So the first re-investment I made was with a designer. I’ve been working with my designer for quite awhile, but never on my own stuff. She’s always helped me with my coaching clients including Katie at Bring Birth Home.

I scanned all my drawings and sent them to her as a PDF then we got on the phone and discussed everything. I held nothing back, and there are some things she will be challenged to create. We worked out an agreement and the process is starting. I feel design and layout is an important aspect of any internet business (for obvious reasons).

Do you see already how getting a job helped me to confidently move forward with an important aspect of realizing my internet business plan?!

So Now What Do I Do While I Wait for the Design to Be Complete?

There is a lot to do in the way of content creation. I won’t be able to create all the content for my entire blog business funnel in the amount of time it takes for my designer to redesign and reconstruct this site. But a little every day goes a long way. Consistency adds up.

The other thing I’m doing is providing consultations and accepting coaching clients again. I had more consultations in the previous three or four weeks than ever before.

The other thing I’m doing is providing blog set up services; providing Aweber set up services; blog promotion coaching and blog business funnel coaching. It’s somewhat amazing to me that in the last month I have spent the least amount of time EVER in front of the computer yet have only earned more once in the two years I’ve been online.

I attribute some of this to a subtle mindset shift and some of this to simply being consistent and doing what is necessary for growth.

    Good on you Eric!

Love the organic process you’ve got going on and the transparency you have in sharing it.

That will help a lot of people.

I’ve always been a big believer that the journey is more about the process than the end destination.

    Will stay tuned for more.

Thank you Ann. I made the mini-realization that the best thing I have to offer before my internet business is realized is the wide-open, transparent documentation of my process. And even as my internet business develops in stages, I will have built a solid foundation of trust.

  2. Eric,

Things change and you seem to be adapting well…

Keep up and looking forward to even more.

Thank you Samantha. You’re a true friend and that is comforting when things change. You’re correct about change, it happens often and always, but there is a thread we follow that goes among things that don’t change, and that is the principle that abides for me.

  3. Hey Eric,

I think they call it responsibility, one door closes, another one opens.

Hi James, I’m so glad you visited my blog. I was looking at your pictures on Facebook the other day of the new deck you put on your place. I really like your Country Renegade approach to life. You have a good thing, man. Not many can live the way you do. Nice work. Thanks again for visiting my blog. How is your site coming along?

I also appreciate your transparency. I am fortunate that I have a husband in a steady job – I helped him last weekend when I set up a blog for him simonwenley.com – he is passionate about helping people keep their teeth and gums healthy. As that was the second WP blog I’ve set up, it was a lot easier.
I am now on a brand new learning program – starting at the very beginnning taking steps to set up online marketing from scratch. The program I am using is free with some excellent video training in short bursts which suits my time constraints extremely well. I struggle with downloading videos that are an hour or more in length and then having to schedule the time to watch, learn and go into action.

      Hi Helen,

You’re correct that installing WP blogs gets much easier the more you do it. It’s cool that you’re helping your husband get started with a blog. I visited the site and Yup, you know what you’re doing. Good work.

I was running the financial red line and it dawned on me that I had to rebuild my foundation. This is so very important especially when raising a family.

It’s good to try a variety of learning programs until you find one that really fits. When I began observing and investigating learning programs outside of Renegade Professional my eyes really opened up. I suppose it’s all part of the journey.

Either way, learning is a good thing. What is the program you found?

  5. Hey Eric, I’m glad things are going well for you. Thanks for sharing everything. I agree that it’s not hard to find a “job”. I see help wanted signs everywhere. It is hard to find a career like you said. You are an inspiration to me.

  6. Rick Salas says:

Hi Eric, It’s great to see the next stage of your life. I’m looking forward to learning more from you and all you share. I’ll be checking back for chapter 2. Sounds exciting. Take care my friend.
