An Exercise for Those Who Struggle to Be Themselves (on the Internet)

Only read this if you have the patience to actually read this word
for word and sentence for sentence. You're looking at 750 words.

If you can't do this. Promise yourself you'll come back later
when you actually have patience to do so.

It doesn't matter what business you're in.
It doesn't matter what guru you subscribe, (or don't subscribe).

This has nothing to do with lead generation; nothing to do with SEO.
This has nothing to do with WordPress; nothing to do with PPC.

This has everything to do with you.

My list isn't large. I haven't mastered traffic generation.
That's okay, it's coming along.

But I am good at...relationships. I'm good at listening. It's
empathy. I'm good at learning from my mistakes. And quickly turning around.

I'm a Reflective. And because of that, I move forward (fast).

What are you good at?

Stay with me, I'm getting to my point. Here's what I want to say...

Most of the content I've created on the web over the last year and a half stinks.

And so does yours. It's unmemorable, unenthusiastic, and ineffective.

Most of it is really just a weak attempt to write about stuff you and I are totally
unconnected to.

Trust me. I know this. I've been reading my content for the last month or so.

There were some pieces that "spoke" and perhaps, poignant. But most of it stinks.

So I've been dismantling, one by one, every lousy Squidoo, Hubpage, Ezine article.

Deleted. Good by.

It's like a detox; shedding my skin. Liberating.

It's good to do that every so often.

Here's my point...

Here's what I'd like for YOU to do today, or this weekend. Or, make a
"date" with yourself to do what I'm about to suggest...

Get your Flip camera out, or whatever recording device you have, take
a walk and think to yourself your most authentic, sincere and "naked"
thought that truly offers your own unique brand of value.

I'll write it again in another way: Find your most authentic thought (whatever
authentic thought is passing by at the moment).

Then without thinking - let it shoot from the hip (on camera - record it).

Whatever it is, just be sure it's the unique you that makes you you in that moment.

Don't edit. Don't try to be perfect. Just try to be YOU.

Post this somewhere. Youtube and Facebook is good. Tag your friends
at Facebook. Tag me. See what kind of response you get.

Then...create a blogger blog. Blogger blogs are SO easy. They take,
literally, 10 minutes to set up and create your first post.

Embed your video at your Blogger blog. Make that quick and easy Blogger blog
your practice blog.

Do this once a week, and before you know it, you'll be true with all
your ... errr... umm... "marketing" messages.

Overall, the consistent exercise in doing this may bring about clarity and truth
for you and the business you're trying to conduct on the web.

And if you're carrying any burdens about you and your "internet
business," they should be lifted.

Let's review what you'll do:

1. Make a date with yourself to take a walk.

2. Take your video camera and be as honest and true to yourself as
possible to create a short video...heck ... or a long video. Whatever.

3. No editing. No perfectionism allowed.

4. Upload to Facebook - tag your friends.

5. Create a Blogger blog cuz it's so damn easy. Embed your video.

6. Do this every week. Make the Blogger blog your "junk" blog until
you're really comfortable in your own skin.

In my opinion this entire exercise does not have to take long. It
shouldn't.

Make this stress free and fun. Listen to yourself - that little voice
inside of you that wears a halo over its head.

Mostly, it should just apply to your life in one way or another.

I wouldn't suggest this exercise if I hadn't already begun doing it
myself.

I've always considered you an original, Eric and this idea proves it.

It's intriguing and a challenge for one to reveal all without editing anything out.

We really have nothing to lose except self-importance.
Thanks for this. I seriously will take you up on this.

Thank you Marie. I like when you said that the only thing we have to lose is our own self-importance. So true. I super appreciate that you came over here to give a comment.

I'll do it Eric. Love your authenticity and challenge here. Thanks for the challenge and I agree about blogger, easy setup.

Briliant Eric. I will definitely be taking you up on your challenge. Sometimes it is all too easy try and 'be' someone else instead of sharing our true self. Thanks for your honesty.

@Jeremy-Awesome! But you're also a natural in front of the camera. You always have been. But hey, let'er rip and send me the link, or better yet, put it on facebook and tag me. Or come back here and put a link in a comment thread.

Yeah, this blogger blog took me, literally, five minutes. I had ditched my Squarespace blog, and could no longer maintain my WordPress Renegade Professional blog cuz I got so busy and had coaching clients and moved here to Portland, etc. etc. so I gave it away to Marketing Merge.

So then I was like, I need a blog, and I didn't want to try and keep up with the Jones' and have some snazzy WordPress blog with all the bells and whistles. I will, but not now. Now I just want a place to hang my hat at the end of the day to share myself, my thoughts and the internet 'thing." So Blogger it was. And I like it. So does Google.

You know, another thing is that "Eric Walker" is one competitive keyword. So this Blogger blog is a first step toward an SEO strategy I have for ranking for my name. What a world we live in where it's important to rank for your name, but it is. It's branding.

Jeremy, my man, God-Bless this holiday season. We still need to catch up. I see you sent me an email about the lead generation marketing funnel tool I'm working on... I'll hit you up about that.

Peace and Love my friend,

Eric

@Danielle, thank you for leaving a comment. You're right. It is ALL to easy to say all the same rehashed stuff that everyone else is trying to say. All in the name of "being a leader" or "being alpha" ... And I think we often lose ourselves in all that. Sometimes it's good to just focus on being you for long sustained periods of time. It might just end up being the best business move ever. In fact, I'm sure of it.
Thanks again for stopping over here to the practice video blog.

Hi, Eric!

Yes, I'm still alive! This post really encouraged me to just take that Flip camera out on my walks. I often do some of my best thinking out on my walks, and then I can't remember the details of my thoughts once I get back home!

So.... no editing, but I WILL put on make-up before I head outside!

THANK YOU!!!

Lisa

Eric,
This is so you! Now I have to figure out how to make it so "me". You always challenge me to do things like this that I find difficult, but I always feel better about them when they're done, because I like being able to speak my mind, authentically.
I'll figure it out with a little blogger practice!

Becky

OK, I like a challenge. I'll give it a go. Now that I have a cute walking companion, this will be fun. Thanks Eric.

Perfect. You've added something of value to the knowledge pool. This is excellent advice and perfect for beginners!

Very valuable, and thank you.

Isn't it amazing how we can look back and see the junk we thought was work - LOL - and strange it sounds but true to be "yourself" on the web but we can drop all of our guards at the local football game.

It is always good to hear the things from others - Thanks for putting it out there.

David Enders, D.C. said...

Yes it was junk, but it was a learning process also. Most of us start with "junk", but as we grow and learn, so does our work and if we are lucky something we have done gets noticed and shared by others. Sometimes the hardest lesson is learning to be ourselves.

This is DOPE. For those of you who aren't "hip" enough lol, that means it's awesome.

Way to be real and authentic Eric and offering a simple yet powerful solution. I love it when I'm hit with something that is exactly what I needed at this time.

When I make my video, I'll be tagging you in it,

AJ

Great advice Eric. I really appreciate your perspective and insight.

I'm going to have to try this with the camera because I am guilty of freezing up when camera is on me.

@Becky-I would think this exercise would be terrific for you try. You're such a natural in front of the camera anyway (even tho I know you don't think so). Thank you for the nice words.

@Michelle-New walking companion? Did you get a dog? For you, I expect to see you all bundled up in the snow. Perhaps making a snowman. Hey...hope you don't get an ice storm like last year, eh?! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate.

@Angela-Oh I know what you mean! I personally would not be bringing the flip cam to the local football game. That's me. That's a little to much of the guard down (if you know what I mean-LOL). But natural is good. Tag me when you do it...maybe you can get a shot of your way into the football game. Before it starts. Take care now.

@DC Enders-I hear you and the process of learning. Ask my good buddy and Renegade Professional Guide Jeremy Henderson (up above)... he edited some of my first videos-HORRIBLE! I was talking all this baloney about Magnetic Sponsoring this and that and man... it was bad. Took me a long time to just relax on camera.
Thanks David.

@AJ-You know I love ya girl. You better be tagging me. And I will totally subscribe to all your videos about natural hair. Love it. Be real and you'll go far fast-you're dynamite, naturally. Appreciate you coming here to comment, thanks.

@ Jeff-Awesome. Tag me on Facebook when you do it. Thank you.

Thank you everyone for commenting. Come back often for more videos.

This is down my line, Eric. I am often on a "date-myself" trip because I wouldn't live long without it!! No, it's notthat bad, but I am that sort of person. However, I do not have a camera, but what I do is write like made, just flowing...it's always fun to read it after a while. Actually, I have so many little "thoughts" hanging around that I do not get down to blogging them. So, even without a camera, writing also helps to find the "you". Thanks for the reminder and the push to start a "myself" blog. Greetings to you at Advent from Germany.
